Unlike a traditional deck of cards that you will often see at a casino, one that has numbers and images of royalty, the tarot is much more elaborate, and there are many different types of decks that you can find unlike the standardized 52 card deck that you can buy in stores to play games like blackjack or 21.
The meanings behind the cards are going to be the same, as well as the type of cards that will be used. It is the illustrations that often change, prompting many people to covet one particular design over another, yet their purpose still remains the same. Different types of decks include the Rider-Waite deck which is commonly found in America, created back in 1909.
It was actually made by a member of what is called the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a group that dealt heavily in the occult, which could be why these decks of cards are often related to those that practice the occult or what some perceive to be dark magic. This 78 card deck consisted of what are called major and minor arcana. Similar to typical playing cards, there are four suits, but not clubs, diamonds, hearts or spades. These suits include circles or pentacles, cups, swords and wands. Each suit has a specific meaning which can help you make decisions in your life, and each suit is numbered from 1 to 10.
There are also what are called court cards representing royalty similar to a standard deck of cards. It will show a page, night, queen and king, and the minor arcana cards address much more simplistic issues such as typical occurrences that may be happening in your life. An example of getting a reading would be receiving a major arcana card that deals with one particular subject, and then subsequently a minor arcana card that is similar. This would indicate that whatever problem you are addressing, or question that you have, that pertains to the different suits is actually becoming less meaningful in your life.
